Lucinda B&B offers heritage Bed and Breakfast accommodation in Latrobe, Tasmania.
Latrobe is a gracious historic township situated 8kms south east of Devonport on the Mersey River. The township was settled in the 1830's and grew rapidly. The township would attract merchants, lawyers, tailors and doctors who all contributed to the prosperity of the town. Latrobe would establish a port, gas works, electric telegraph, hospital and railway and become know as the "Capital of the North West".
In 1889 the Devon Cottage Hospital was opened. The hospital would service a large, wide-spread population and would have to attract additional medical practitioners to the township. In 1890 Dr. William Robert Stewart would leave Evandale with his young wife and start his medical practice at Latrobe.
Dr. Stewart came from a prominent Evandale family . His father William Snr was Major of Evandale and a pillar of the community. He married Alexander Louise Button in 1885. Alexander was the granddaughter of the renowned english artist John Glover. In 1891 Dr. Stewart began the construction of his family home on Forth Street . Set upon substantial acerage "Lucinda" would showcase his wealth and social standing. The beautiful victorian mansion can now be enjoyed as B&B accommodation. Lucinda B&B sits upon the remaining 4 acres of grounds with trees that are now over 110 years old. A quiet and peaceful location but within walking distance to the town centre.
Latrobe is central to all Northern Tasmanian attractions and is a part of the "Cradle Country" touring route. A short 8km drive from the Sprit of Tasmania & Devonport airport makes Lucinda B&B an idea first night or last night stay in Tasmania or as a base for exploring the region.
